Moonlight Flicks is an outdoor silent cinema in the amncient Roman gardebs of Chester, run by Storyhouse (previously Chester Performs) – one of the UK’s foremost cultural charities, with it’s home in Chester that incorporates a library, theathers and cinema.
Storyhouse is one of the country’s most successful arts buildings, with more than one million customer visits each year. The pioneering new library within Storyhouse, runs over 2,000 sessions a year for marginalised communities.
It is also an acclaimed theatre producer and runs the country’s most successful regional open-air theatre, in the city’s Grosvenor Park and Moonlight Flicks open air cinema and drive-in. Storyhouse currently holds the official title as the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre and was the overall national winner in the 2018 Guardian Public Service Awards.
Many moons ago, we designed a solar powered cinema called Star Bar, which went around the festival scene. Based on this experience,
We were commissioned by Storyhouse to utilise all the resources the city had to offer and make into a venue or a performance space. One of the projects to come from that was Moonlight Flicks. The season has been running since 2013 and is still a main feature in Chester’s summer programme.
